Marion / Polk Chapter Update:

It is already time for most Chapters to take a break for summer.   Marion-Polk Chapter also takes the summer off, but we will be having our last meeting on Tuesday,   6-23-09.   We will then resume our meetings in September.

Marion-Polk Chapter has been busy trying to recruit new members and encourage more participation within the Chapter.    The May meeting was scheduled as “Student Night” and the 2009 graduating class of Chemeketa Community College was invited to attend the meeting.   The students were honored and recognized at the meeting and encouraged to stay for the business meeting.   The education for May was Dr. William Lear from Silver Falls Dermatology in Salem.   Dr. Lear provided a very interesting and educational session for the members and students.   Everyone thoroughly enjoyed his topic.   I am pleased to share that there were 7 students that attended our meeting in May and they all stayed for the business meeting.   The students actively participated in discussions and shared their views with the Chapter members.   The students were encouraged to join AAMA as student members and become involved in AAMA, OSMA and Marion-Polk Chapter.   Several of the students were planning to join and become active members of Marion-Polk Chapter.    Marion-Polk Chapter is thrilled to have these new members be part of our Chapter.   The hope is that more new members will be recruited over the next several months.   The goal of Marion-Polk Chapter this year is to recruit new members, irregardless of their credential and provide quality education to all members.   We are pleased to have these new members join our Chapter.

Education for June will be Dr. Bruce Carter from Salem, speaking about Reconstructive Options Following Trauma.   Marion-Polk Chapter takes July and August off and will resume meetings in September.    Our education for September is a tour of the Diagnostic Imaging facility in Salem with information regarding the services that are offered to patients in the Salem area.   We are currently planning education topics for the remainder of the year.

Marion-Polk Chapter continues to encourage participation among its members and strives to recruit new members and continue to be the strong and viable Chapter it has been over the past many years.   Marion-Polk Chapter hosted the 2009 OSMA Conference and Preconference Coding Seminar, which were both quite successful.

Marion-Polk Chapter meets on the fourth Tuesday of each month at 6:00 p.m. in the basement of Building B of Salem Hospital, in meeting rooms B & C.   For more information regarding Marion-Polk Chapter or meetings, please contact me at boyd.kathy@wvi.com.   We look forward to seeing you at a meeting!

BOT Highlights: April 2009

Post Conference meeting of the OSMA Board of Trustees

Newly installed OSMA President, Joyce Garibay, CMA (AAMA) introduced her theme and designated service project for the year, which encourages everyone to be a “bucket filler.” This form of positive psychology includes working together as a team, being liberal with hugs and positive affirmations of each other, and extends to “filling the buckets” of local food banks. Each time the OSMA Board meets during the coming year, non-perishable food items will be collected and donated to a food bank in the community in which the meeting is held.

Following are a few highlights of the meeting:

  • Newly approved Bylaws with corrections and updates will be distributed to members of the OSMA Board and posted on the OSMA website.

  • The updated Board Manual will be available for distribution at the Summer meeting of the OSMA Board.

  • December 1 will be the annual deadline for submission of proposed Bylaws changes to allow time for proper review prior to the Annual House of Delegates..  Submissions will be made to the Bylaws Team Leader and forwarded to the Bylaws team members and the current President and Parliamentarian.

  • The Membership and Marketing Team will undertake a project to contact by letter, AAMA CMAs who have not joined the AAMA and former members who have not renewed their membership.

  • OSMA Fall Quarterly 2009 will be held in Bend on Saturday, October 17.

  • OSMA Winter Quarterly 2010 will be held in Eugene on Saturday, January 23.

  • OSMA Conference 2010 will be hosted by Linn-Benton Chapter and held April 22-25, at the Linn County Expo Center with lodging at the Holiday Inn Express. The theme will be KISS (Keep It Simply Simple).

President’s Report: June 2009

The OSMA Conference in April 2009, hosted by Marion-Polk Chapter, was a big success. Attendance was moderate in numbers, but the education was top-notch, the Renaissance Inn a lovely facility and the staff most accommodating. The President thanks the members of Marion-Polk Chapter for all their hard work and Lane Chapter member, Candy Miller, CMA (AAMA) for coordinating a charming installation of officers on Saturday evening. We salute the many past OSMA Presidents who attended the President’s Luncheon on Saturday afternoon. It is always a pleasure to see our long-time friends and to know that you are interested in the current activities of OSMA.

Since the April OSMA Conference, the President traveled to Everett, Washington with OSMA President-elect and the OSMA Parliamentarian to attend the Washington State Society Medical Assistants (WSSMA) 2009 Conference. We three were warmly received visitors to the WSSMA House of Delegates. The educational sessions were interesting and Friday evening’s fun night, with a “Tacky Tourist” theme, was great fun.

The names of Oregon’s Delegates to the AAMA National Conference were submitted in mid-May. Confirmation of receipt was received. As required of the OSMA President, I submitted a volunteer application and resume to serve on an AAMA committee or task force and I look forward to learning of my assignment.

Several OSMA teams are hard at work on their respective assignments. The Board of Trustees will meet on Saturday, June 27 in Portland for the Summer Board meeting.

It is an honor to serve as President of OSMA. Thank you for your confidence and support.

Joyce Garibay, CMA (AAMA)

OSMA President 2009-2010

President Elect: June 2009

I am very proud and honored to have been elected as your OSMA President-Elect, and I will do my very best to carry out the duties that I am assigned.

One of the duties as President-Elect is to attend the Washington State Society Of Medical Assistant’s Annual Conference.  Our President, Parliamentarian and I attended their conference 4-23-09 thru 4-26-09 in Bremerton, Washington. We attended their Pre-Conference Board Meeting, House of Delegates, Fun Night, Installation, Educational Sessions and their Post-Conference Board Meeting.  We enjoyed renewing old acquaintances and meeting new people from all over the state of Washington.  We had a great time at the Fun Night that was called “Tacky Tourist Hawaiian Style.”

The President-Elect will be attending the Quarterly Board of Trustees Meeting which will be held at the Providence Hospital in Portland on June 27, 2009.

One of the duties as President-Elect is to attend the AAMA National Conference in September and attend the House of Delegates with the OSMA President and the two delegates.  Plans for our room have been made and our airline tickets have already been purchased.  We are looking forward to also renewing old acquaintances there and making new friends.  There is always great education to attend and great memories to bring home and share with OSMA and LCMA.

The President and President-Elect have been invited to visit The Central Oregon Chapter September 19th and Lane Chapter in April 2010.

I look forward to the coming year serving as your President-Elect and looking for ways to better our profession thru education, resources and membership.

Sylvia Aldrich, CMA (AAMA)

OSMA President-Elect

Secretary’s Report: June 2009

I am proud and honored to serve as Secretary for Oregon Society of Medical Assistants for the ensuing term.  I look forward to working for the society and maintaining a record of our quarterly meetings.  I am dedicated to the future of Medical Assisting throughout the state and the nation.  I represent a group of very dedicated health care servants who have chosen Medical Assisting as their profession.  The records I keep will be a testimony to that endeavor.

With honor and sincerity,

Katrina Bowser, CMA (AAMA)

OSMA Secretary 2009-10

OSMA Summer 2009 Quarterly Reports:

The Membership Team was charged with developing a letter to be sent to non-renewing members and CMA (AAMA) non-members.  The letter included a survey that asked questions about current employment status, membership, and more.  The task was completed and over 600 letters were sent in June.  It is the hope of the team that we can evaluate and determine the obstacles regarding AAMA membership.

The other project the Membership Team is working on is sending letters to new members.  Since AAMA has gone green, OSMA has not received membership updates.  The Team Manager is working with the AAMA Membership Director to receive monthly updates on medical assistants who are new members of AAMA.  The Membership Team Manager will send the list to all Chapter Presidents to contact new members.  The OSMA Membership Team will send a letter of introduction including the Chapter President’s name and contact information.  The first letter will be sent in June 2009.

OSMA currently has over 850 members as of May 2009.  This is up about 25 members at this time last year.
