OSMA President’s Report; Winter 2009

The OSMA Board met on Saturday, October 17 at the Bend Memorial Clinic, following the OSMA Fall Quarterly education. Central Oregon Chapter is to be commended for the excellent education they provided at that meeting and for being such gracious hostesses. Several pounds of non-perishable food were donated by attendees, and taken to a Bend-area food bank following the meeting. Thank you COCMA for all your work on behalf of OSMA!

The OSMA Board will meet again on Saturday, January 23, 2010, following the morning session of the Winter Quarterly education to be held at Slocum Center, 55 Coburg Road in Eugene. The education will run from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The OSMA Board meeting will convene at 1:00 p.m.

The President and President-elect are working on a postcard to send to all OSMA members, identifying the dates and locations of meetings and OSMA-sponsored education opportunities in the coming 12 to 18 months.

The President and President-elect are also planning the OSMA Leadership Retreat and the education sessions, to be held at Camp Cascade, Lyons, Oregon, March 6 and 7, 2010. We are looking forward to a great weekend retreat with old friends and hoping to see many new faces there next March. Remember, everyone is welcome to attend this informative weekend.

It is an honor to serve as President of Oregon Society. Thank you for placing your confidence in me. May you remain healthy and enjoy a blessed and stress-free holiday season with friends and family.

OSMA President Elect Winter Report

I can’t believe that it is already December and time to get the tree out and start doing the
decorating in my house for the Christmas Holidays. It makes me stop and think what I am thankful for and happy about in my life. I am happy and thankful for my friends, family, my job, my health, my home and in this great organization that we belong to. We all care about each other very deeply and try to help others in all that we do and say. Always remember that what you say to someone should always be sweet, caring and not being said to cause the other pain.

Lane Chapter for our project asks members to put together shoeboxes with items that we can take to the Eugene Mission right before Christmas and are given to women that are staying in the mission and do not have a home to go to for the holidays. We put in items such as warm gloves, scarves, lip gloss, hair brushes, toothbrushes, hair care products, bath care products, candy and bibles. We wrap the top and bottom separate so that the mission can see what is in the boxes and can match it up with what women need at the mission. You get a very warm feeling knowing that you are giving to others and helping out in some small way.

Think about what you can do at this time of year to help someone in need and don’t be afraid to reach out with kindness even if it is in a small way. I work in a cancer facility where people are sacred and sometimes very sick. Even a smile and saying something like “that is a very pretty blouse you have on” or “what a beautiful smile you have”. I do a lot of record requests for patients and I always reassure them that I am happy to help them. I always ask if there is anything else that I can do to help them and let them know if there is to please call me and let me know. I always reach my hand out and shake theirs and let them know that it is a pleasure to meet them. When I talk to people on the phone I always try to smile and be positive and let that feeling go thru the phone to that person.

I hope to see a lot of you at the Leadership Retreat March 6-7th 2010. We have speakers with great education topics, great food and a fantastic time getting to know other members.

If there is anything that I can do to help any of you please do not be afraid to ask me. If I do not know how to help you I bet I will find someone that can. Please feel free to email me at home at ehaldrich@juno.com. We are a caring organization that knows how
to reach out and help others and that is why we are Certified Medical Office Assistants.

Have a safe holiday and Merry Christmas to you all,
Sylvia Aldrich, CMA(AAMA)
OSMA President-Elect

OSMA Immediate Past President Report

The OSMA Immediate Past President attended the Fall Quarterly meeting in Bend, Oregon in October. The education was wonderful and the meeting went well. The weather was beautiful with sunshine for everyone that attended.

The Immediate Past President serves as the Chair to the Past Presidents Council. During this quarter, the PPC has served as advisor to the OSMA President, Joyce Garibay, CMA (AAMA). When called upon for advice and assistance, the PPC has been available to assist the President.

An additional duty of the PPC is to submit award applications to AAMA for deserving members of AAMA Excel Awards. In anticipation of this duty, the Immediate Past President has drafted an article for publication on the OSMA website, explaining the awards that are given by AAMA and asking OSMA members if they have anyone they wish to nominate for one of these prestigious awards. The PPC will be looking at potential candidates for Excel Awards and will be putting together award packets to make these submissions prior to the 7-1-10 deadline.

The PPC and Immediate Past President continue to be available to the OSMA President for advice and assistance in any matter the President requires.

OSMA Membership Team Report

The Membership Team consists of Membership; Speaker’s Bureau; and the Certification.

The OSMA Membership Team has been working hard at increasing our membership. The primary reason is because membership to AAMA means benefits to a CMA (AAMA).

Some of the benefits of membership are, cost differential for education or conferences; AAMA backs you up by credential verification; enhanced professional credibility; potential Job leads in your state or around the country; CEU options, and more. In Oregon membership is $85 per year, which is a little over $7.00 per month. That’s less than a movie ticket! So, if you are interested in membership or more information, please contact the Membership Team. We are here for you!

Oregon Society of Medical Assistants has a reason to celebrate! Our membership growth from 2008 to current has brought in 126 new members for a total of 940 members!

Thank you to our members who see the value of the AAMA support!

Speaker’s Bureau:

This is a sub-team of Membership and is lead by Johnny Adamson, CMA-AC (AAMA). Within this quarter approximately 8 schools have been visited. During the visit Team Leader Adamson presents information regarding membership, certification, and any other topic concerning the students.

If you would like someone to speak to your school, do a presentation at your clinic or speak with your manager, please contact the Membership Team.

Lane Chapter Winter Update

During this season of giving, Lane Chapter has been supporting two community service projects. The first one we’ve been doing all year; Food for Lane County. We are asking each attendee to our educational meetings to bring a non-perishable item or two. These and then collected and taken to them. So far we have donated about 90 pounds of food. The second project is shoeboxes filled with toiletries, personal items, scarves and other miscellaneous things. These will be donated to the women and children at the “Eugene Mission”.

We have had some excellent educational sessions. LCMA is hosting the OSMA Winter Quarterly meeting. The subject will be immunizations. It will be held at the Slocum Center on January 23rd. It will be 6 CEU hours. Registration will be limited, so sign up soon. Other upcoming educational sessions are: January; Renal Function, February; Hypertension, March; Safety at Work. We will also be hosting a Seminar on March 13, 2010 on Coding: New ICD-10.

LCMA meets for its educational meetings at PacificSource. I personally want to thank them for allowing us to use their facility for our meetings. It is an excellent location for us. Your support of LCAM is greatly appreciated. Also, I’d like to give a big round of gratitude to Debbie and Stephanie, our Provider Representatives for setting up the room and staying for our meeting. Thanks, is truly not enough!

As I’m writing this message, recovering from knee surgery, it makes me appreciate life and how lucky I truly am. I have a wonderful family, a great AAMA second family and so many other things to e thankful for. Thank you for your confidence in allowing me to serve as President of the Lane Chapter of Medical Assistants. It is an honor and a privilege that I don’t take lightly. I believe my theme for the year states my feelings well; Pride, Passion and Perseverance. Be PROUD of credentials, be PASSIONATE of your career and PERSEVERE…………..don’t let anything get you down.

Who Do You Think Deserves to be the Recipient of a National Award of Distinction?

Did you know that AAMA presents awards of excellence and distinction to the hard working members of AAMA? Many of these awards are given to state societies for recruiting and retaining members, but there are also some very special awards of distinction that can be earned by individual members from our state.
OSMA has many deserving members that have earned these awards in the past and many more members that are deserving of these awards. So, how do members earn these awards? The first step is to be nominated by someone in your state society. It is now the responsibility of the OSMA Past Presidents Council to submit award applications for these National Awards of Distinction. In order to honor our wonderful members, they must be nominated and there is a lengthy award application that must be completed on the member’s behalf. This article is being written to summarize the three individual National Awards of Distinction and list the qualifications for each award. If you know of any member you feel is deserving of one of these awards, please let the PPC know and we will work on an award application for that member if they are qualified. There is no greater honor than to be the recipient of a National Award of Distinction. These are the National Awards of Distinction:

1. The Spirit of Medical Assisting Award – This is the AAMA award that is given to a member that has gone above and beyond to promote the profession of medical assisting at the local, state and national level. The recipient of this award has demonstrated the true qualities of a certified medical assistant and has promoted that profession to others through their work and volunteerism.

2. The Leadership and Mentoring Award – This award is presented to the member that has worked tirelessly for AAMA and has dedicated many hours of work for AAMA, as well as their local and state societies, as a volunteer and has served as a mentor to his or her fellow medical assistants through volunteer work.

3. The Golden Apple Award – This award is given to the member that has promoted the profession through education. This is given to a medical assisting instructor that has given of himself or herself to the students to provide the best educational experience possible. This person should have also contributed in some way to the publication of a medical assisting textbook.

This summarizes the National Awards of Distinction that are given to AAMA members from across the country. If you think you know of anyone that is deserving of one of these awards, please contact the OSMA PPC and let us know. We will evaluate the candidate’s qualification and submit all qualified candidates to AAMA for consideration for these awards. We don’t want to miss any of our qualified candidates!

River Cities Chapter Winter Update

Merry Christmas and A Happy New Year to you all. Our caroling was enjoyed by the residents of Menlo Park Health Care Center and we hope our donations of art supplies will keep them engaged in the months to come. Dinner at Newport Bay followed as we celebrated the holidays. Thanks to all who joined us.

River Cities Chapter will be hosting the 2011 OSMA Conference. Joce Willis has agreed to be the Chair and keep us coordinated. This will mean an incredible amount of work for the Chapter to get things ready to introduce in April at the 2010 conference. There will be many jobs for willing hands and we would love to have you join us in making this a fantastic endeavor.

Our first education will be at Portland Providence in the Cancer Center Amphitheater on January 9th. This year our education meetings will be free to all AAMA members and $10.00 for all non-members. Students are invited to attend their first meeting free and then encouraged join as student members. We will have membership information available at every meeting. We would also like to remind everyone that we will have a canned food donation at every meeting so lets help fill the bucket of the Oregon Food Bank.

Another date we would like to have you save is September 11, 2010. That will be the Fall Quarterly meeting of OSMA hosted by RCCMA. This meeting will have 2 CEU’s of Coding Education and 2 CEU’s of Field Medicine and Wound Care. A box lunch will be included in the registration fee. This is a slight deviation from our original schedule.

We hope this is the year you make the commitment to become an active member of RCCMA. Our president elect Spring Coulter likens it to a bank account. The more you put in the more you will have to take out.

Molly Bilyeu, CMA(AAMA)

Marion-Polk Winter Update

Marion-Polk Chapter has been busy trying to recruit and retain members. The Chapter has started some new things at meetings to see if members will return to the meetings. Beginning in November, a light dinner has been provided to members that attend. For the November meeting, all members attending the business meeting were entered into a drawing for a free registration for the OSMA Winter Quarterly. The Chapter takes December off, but there will be a Chapter Christmas Party on Tuesday,
12-15-09 at Round Table Pizza at Keizer Station. All members are welcomed and encouraged to attend the party and spend some well deserved social time with Chapter members. There will be a gift exchange for all those that wish to participate.

Meetings will resume in January and food will again be served It is the thought of our Chapter members that it is difficult to attend a meeting after working all day and then try to fit meal time in as well. Those attending the business meeting will be put in a drawing for a free registration for the OSMA Leadership Retreat, to be held at Camp Cascade on March 6-7, 2010. Marion-Polk Chapter is trying to give back to its members and make the meetings more enjoyable for all that attend.
There have been some wonderful speakers for the education portion of our meetings. Debbie Smith, CPC, CPC-P, from MP Chapter, provided a session on “Coding 101” for the November education and will be back in January to provide “Coding Updates for 2010”. We are still looking for speakers for future meetings and encourage all members to give ideas to the MP leadership on topics they would like to see for meetings.

MP Chapter will be holding elections in February and we are looking for candidates to run for office. We are looking for candidates for President-Elect, Secretary, Treasurer and Member at Large, as well as delegates to the 2010 OSMA Annual Conference. Anyone interested in running for office should contact one of the MP officers.

MP Chapter is always excited to see new members and encourage all members of the Chapter to become more involved in Chapter business and activities. For any questions or suggestions, please feel free to contact Chapter President, Kathy Puckett, CMA (AAMA) at kathypcma@yahoo.com. We meet on the fourth Tuesday of each month in Salem Hospital building B, in the basement in meeting rooms B & C. Stop by if get a chance!
