The OSMA Board met on Saturday, October 17 at the Bend Memorial Clinic, following the OSMA Fall Quarterly education. Central Oregon Chapter is to be commended for the excellent education they provided at that meeting and for being such gracious hostesses. Several pounds of non-perishable food were donated by attendees, and taken to a Bend-area food bank following the meeting. Thank you COCMA for all your work on behalf of OSMA!
The OSMA Board will meet again on Saturday, January 23, 2010, following the morning session of the Winter Quarterly education to be held at Slocum Center, 55 Coburg Road in Eugene. The education will run from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The OSMA Board meeting will convene at 1:00 p.m.
The President and President-elect are working on a postcard to send to all OSMA members, identifying the dates and locations of meetings and OSMA-sponsored education opportunities in the coming 12 to 18 months.
The President and President-elect are also planning the OSMA Leadership Retreat and the education sessions, to be held at Camp Cascade, Lyons, Oregon, March 6 and 7, 2010. We are looking forward to a great weekend retreat with old friends and hoping to see many new faces there next March. Remember, everyone is welcome to attend this informative weekend.
It is an honor to serve as President of Oregon Society. Thank you for placing your confidence in me. May you remain healthy and enjoy a blessed and stress-free holiday season with friends and family.
Joyce Garibay, CMA (AAMA)
OSMA President 2009-2010
I can’t believe that it is already December and time to get the tree out and start doing the
decorating in my house for the Christmas Holidays. It makes me stop and think what I am thankful for and happy about in my life. I am happy and thankful for my friends, family, my job, my health, my home and in this great organization that we belong to. We all care about each other very deeply and try to help others in all that we do and say. Always remember that what you say to someone should always be sweet, caring and not being said to cause the other pain.
Lane Chapter for our project asks members to put together shoeboxes with items that we can take to the Eugene Mission right before Christmas and are given to women that are staying in the mission and do not have a home to go to for the holidays. We put in items such as warm gloves, scarves, lip gloss, hair brushes, toothbrushes, hair care products, bath care products, candy and bibles. We wrap the top and bottom separate so that the mission can see what is in the boxes and can match it up with what women need at the mission. You get a very warm feeling knowing that you are giving to others and helping out in some small way.
Think about what you can do at this time of year to help someone in need and don’t be afraid to reach out with kindness even if it is in a small way. I work in a cancer facility where people are sacred and sometimes very sick. Even a smile and saying something like “that is a very pretty blouse you have on” or “what a beautiful smile you have”. I do a lot of record requests for patients and I always reassure them that I am happy to help them. I always ask if there is anything else that I can do to help them and let them know if there is to please call me and let me know. I always reach my hand out and shake theirs and let them know that it is a pleasure to meet them. When I talk to people on the phone I always try to smile and be positive and let that feeling go thru the phone to that person.
I hope to see a lot of you at the Leadership Retreat March 6-7th 2010. We have speakers with great education topics, great food and a fantastic time getting to know other members.
If there is anything that I can do to help any of you please do not be afraid to ask me. If I do not know how to help you I bet I will find someone that can. Please feel free to email me at home at ehaldrich@juno.com. We are a caring organization that knows how
to reach out and help others and that is why we are Certified Medical Office Assistants.
Have a safe holiday and Merry Christmas to you all,
Sylvia Aldrich, CMA(AAMA)
OSMA President-Elect
The OSMA Immediate Past President attended the Fall Quarterly meeting in Bend, Oregon in October. The education was wonderful and the meeting went well. The weather was beautiful with sunshine for everyone that attended.
The Immediate Past President serves as the Chair to the Past Presidents Council. During this quarter, the PPC has served as advisor to the OSMA President, Joyce Garibay, CMA (AAMA). When called upon for advice and assistance, the PPC has been available to assist the President.
An additional duty of the PPC is to submit award applications to AAMA for deserving members of AAMA Excel Awards. In anticipation of this duty, the Immediate Past President has drafted an article for publication on the OSMA website, explaining the awards that are given by AAMA and asking OSMA members if they have anyone they wish to nominate for one of these prestigious awards. The PPC will be looking at potential candidates for Excel Awards and will be putting together award packets to make these submissions prior to the 7-1-10 deadline.
The PPC and Immediate Past President continue to be available to the OSMA President for advice and assistance in any matter the President requires.

The Membership Team consists of Membership; Speaker’s Bureau; and the Certification.
The OSMA Membership Team has been working hard at increasing our membership. The primary reason is because membership to AAMA means benefits to a CMA (AAMA).
Some of the benefits of membership are, cost differential for education or conferences; AAMA backs you up by credential verification; enhanced professional credibility; potential Job leads in your state or around the country; CEU options, and more. In Oregon membership is $85 per year, which is a little over $7.00 per month. That’s less than a movie ticket! So, if you are interested in membership or more information, please contact the Membership Team. We are here for you!
Oregon Society of Medical Assistants has a reason to celebrate! Our membership growth from 2008 to current has brought in 126 new members for a total of 940 members!
Thank you to our members who see the value of the AAMA support!
Speaker’s Bureau:
This is a sub-team of Membership and is lead by Johnny Adamson, CMA-AC (AAMA). Within this quarter approximately 8 schools have been visited. During the visit Team Leader Adamson presents information regarding membership, certification, and any other topic concerning the students.
If you would like someone to speak to your school, do a presentation at your clinic or speak with your manager, please contact the Membership Team.
