A Message From the President...
Since my last report, I have attended the Winter Quarterly in Salem on February 2, 2008. There was excellent education and the attendance was very good. Our business meeting brought new and exciting projects. One of those projects is the “Professional Attire” closet. OSMA has decided to collect donations for a professional attire closet. These donations will be at the OSMA Annual Conference in Eugene, Oregon, April 10th-13th. The closet will include clothes that can be used for interviewing or for jobs. We hope to gather shoes to go with the clothes. The “Professional Attire” closet was developed to help members who need assistance with professional attire. The clothes will come pressed, and clean for anyone to receive. If you’d like to contribute to this cause, please contact me or Molly Bilyeu, CMA(AAMA) OSMA Mentoring Team Leader.
We implemented the Leadership Camp this year. In years past many members attended this camp at Camp Cascade in Lyons Oregon. At the 2008 Leadership Camp we had 26 attendees and 3 speakers. Our first speaker, Carol Tamparo, PhD, CMA(AAMA)-A (AAMA) is a renown author of medical assisting text books. She spoke on “Concierge Customer Service.” The point of the presentation was giving the best service to our patients, and our fellow coworkers. Another speaker, Cam Willis, BS, spoke to us about “Marketing Your Credentials” on how to market ourselves and our organization. It’s important to remember that as a CMA(AAMA) we are professionals. Our credentials mean something to us. You’ve worked hard to get where you are so don’t forget to “market” your credentials to your employer and fellow medical assistants. Make sure that a copy of your certification gets into your personnel file. Our last speaker was Johnny Adamson, CMA(AAMA)-AC (AAMA), AAMA Trustee and member of the River Cities Chapter. She spoke to us about “Burnout.” It was a topic that many medical assistants could relate to and for many medical assistants, it was the warning bell. We had excellent food and it was fun for all.
I attended the Lane Chapter meeting on February 21, 2008. There was an excellent attendance of members. The topic was “Coding Updates” given by Debbie Smith, CPC, and a member of the Marion-Polk Chapter. There was an excellent turn-out of students who are fired up about medical assisting. Lane Chapter is hosting this year’s annual conference April 10-13, 2008 at the Red Lion Inn. Don’t forget to ask for time off for this event.
I will be attending the River Cities Chapter meeting March 29th at Providence Medical Center. The topic is “Risk Management and the Medical Assistant Legal Ramification of Poor Communication” presented by Kelly Rinehart RN, CNOR, RNFA, CPHRM with Medical Risk Consulting, LLC. This topic is important for all medical assistants whether they are certified or not. Ms. Rinehart will be teaching us the importance of open and clear communication. This will be my chapter visit and my last visit for my term. I am excited that my last visit will be with my own chapter.
As I close the last chapter of my Presidency, I am reminded of the friendships and the professional liaisons that I have developed. OSMA is your professional organization. It is a place where you can find friends, answers to questions, new jobs, pertinent education, and much more. I am reminded that I’ve achieved my goals. I reinstated the Leadership Camp, implemented a new idea with the “Membership Drive and Job Fair.” This project was implemented with my chapter, River Cities Chapter of Medical Assistants. The event was well received by attendees and exhibitors. Saw the idea of a “Professional Attire” project come to life.
The success of OSMA is in the hands of you, the members. The members who are elected as your leaders are volunteers. OSMA leaders work hard are making sure that the CMA(AAMA) credential is marketed to employers and the general public. OSMA leaders work with you, the members, to ensure that education is provided in most areas throughout the state. OSMA leaders make sure that Oregon members are kept abreast on the latest AAMA news and changes. OSMA leaders care about you, the member. Please join us and volunteer to be part of the leadership of OSMA.
I want to thank my chapter, River Cities, for their dedication, and support. The support I had from my chapter and the 2007-2008 OSMA Board of Trustees has been invaluable and treasured. Thank you for the hard work and dedication.
Respectfully Submitted,
Paula Purdy, CMA(AAMA)
OSMA President 2007-2008
